Dive No. 12: Owhiro Bay, Wellington, New Zealand

E-mail Print PDF

Really fantastic dive!

This was my first dive to a ship wreck. The Yung Pen was a Korean fishing boat, wrecked off Owhiro Bay on Wellington\'s south coast in 1982 during a storm. She split in two, loosing her boiler in the process, with her bow almost ending up on the road while the stern section sank not far from the beach in eight meters of water. It sits upside down, like some sort of underwater tent providing a home for the invertebrate life.

The boiler is located about 30 meters east of the stern section and is home to many crabs and lobsters. There were numerous fish around the hull and underneath, including red moki, scarlet and banded wrasses, spotties and blue cod.

This dive site is part of a proposed marine reserve. The road around the coast has plenty of places to park with a short walk into the water. Access to the Yung Pen site is down a disused concrete boat ramp and a short surface swim of about 50 meters.
